Message from our MD

With December now upon us and the New Year looming, naturally we all look back on how quickly the year has passed. Itís incredible to think that we will once again embrace the festive season and soon after 2017 will arrive!

I think it is fair to say 2016 has been a challenging year globally. It has also been a year that has seen plenty of hard work undertaken which of course makes us all look forward to enjoying the holiday season.

One of the real joys of the holiday season is having the opportunity to say thank you. Your support during the year has helped us on our journey to fulfil our mission of being a catalyst for the development of the knowledge economy.

On behalf of the team at Sabinet, I wish you an enjoyable and safe festive season.

I look forward to seeing you again in the New Year.

Yours sincerely,
Rosalind Hattingh

SANLiCís collection now available on the OCLC knowledge base

Honing access to high-quality scholarly electronic information is critical for research, teaching and learning in Public Higher Education and Research Institutions.

To this end, Sabinet is honoured to assist with the compilation and uploading SANLiCís collection to the OCLC Global knowledge base.

The WorldCat knowledge base connects library users to the electronic content provided by their library. It combines data about a libraryís e-resources with linking features that make the collections easier to find, share, manage and use.

The cooperative functionality of the WorldCat knowledge base allow for representation of collections that libraries have curated and exhibit full collections from a provider or it can be a representation of specific collections e.g. the SANLiC Subsets.

SANLiCís Freedom Collection is already available in the Global knowledge base for selection by all academic institutions in South Africa.

We continually look for groundbreaking solutions that enable our clients to operate optimally, maximising efficiencies while minimising costs and this is a shared objective with our long-standing partner, the Online Computer Library Centre (OCLC).

University of California: A bolt from the blue (and gold)

It was a great pleasure to welcome Ruby A. Bell-Gam and Rosalie Lack from the University of California, Los Angeles to our office in Centurion.

Ruby is the Librarian for African Studies and International Development Studies Charles E. Young Research Library and Rosalie Lack is Project Manager for the International Digital Ephemera Project (IDEP).

As great enthusiasts of digital preservation, the knowledge they gained from our vast experience in specialised and customised digitisation services was well received.

The Ďwowí factor of the entire visit is attributed to our Digitisation Specialists Ė demonstrating the process of protecting valuable and lasting resources for academics and researchers.
